Wantagh Students All Smiles During Games for the Physically Challenged

Over 60 students and buddies from the Wantagh School District gathered in the high school auditorium for an amazing sendoff to the Nassau County for the Physically Challenged. One by one, students wearing matching t-shirts heading to the annual event walked through the receiving line of students and supporters snapping their fingers as each student boarded the bus to Mitchell Field.
Each student and their buddy participated in one or more events including the 40M dash, 100M dash, 40M and 100M Wheelchair Race, obstacle courses, as well as throwing, ring and bean bag tossing, batting, and more. The cheers and support for each participant were contagious. In between races, students enjoyed arts and crafts, coloring, games, beading, bowling, and fishing games. Throughout the entire stadium, there was a fun and exciting activity for all abilities.
“The Games weren't just a competition; they were a vibrant celebration of inclusion, uniting athletes, buddies, and staff in a powerful display of community,” says Dr. Maura LaChance, Supervisor of Special Education. “It was a remarkable opportunity to highlight the unique abilities of every individual. The incredible determination and perseverance shown by the athletes, combined with the tireless efforts of parents, incredible peer buddies, and supportive teachers and aides, made this event truly special and a resounding success.”
According to the Nassau County for the Physically Challenged website, the goal of the games is to offer physically challenged youth the opportunity to participate in competitive races and recreational activities that best suit their abilities. The organization has been organizing the event for the past 39 years and is open to individuals between the ages of 5-21 with a physical challenge.
