Although they will work across all five buildings, the 22 new teachers who gathered in the Wantagh Middle School library on Aug. 28 will always share a special bond. Their careers in the Wantagh School District began together in 2023.

Director of Human Resources Dr. Stephanie Scolieri said that 19 teachers are brand new to Wantagh for the 2023-2024 school year, at both the elementary and secondary levels. A few started in February and were also invited to the three-day new teacher orientation program, as it will be their first full year in the district.

Orientation began with an introduction from Superintendent John McNamara, who welcomed them to Wantagh and noted that the program would serve as great introduction to the district. He said the new teachers were selected from among hundreds of applicants.

“We pride ourselves on having a great staff and a pretty rigorous hiring process,” he said. “We want people who are here for the right reasons and put students first.”

The first day included presentations by administrators on effective communication, individualized learning, inspirational learning and professionalism. In the afternoon, teachers attended orientation programs at their buildings. On Aug. 29, there was a technology overview, and new teachers met their mentors for the coming year. Teachers then boarded a bus and took a tour of the district, led by Mr. McNamara. After two superintendent conference days, new teachers could visit their home schools on Sept. 1 to set up their classrooms. 

There will be monthly workshops throughout the year for new teachers to support their learning and growth. Topics include best instructional practices, celebration of great work, library instructional resources, observations, reflective practice, special education services and technology.
